253MA exhibits excellent creep resistance and is used for high temperature applications such as furnace parts, car exhaust systems and boiler baffles. As a result of its higher operating temperature range, 253MA has slightly reduced ductility and impact toughness compared with Grades 304 and 316. However, the general corrosion resistance is similar to that of Grade 304 austenitic stainless steel.

However, like other austenitic stainless steels work hardening rates are high and the tools must be kept sharp to avoid built-up edge (BUE) and welding on the cutting tools. These should be used as general guide lines only since there are so many variables involved in machining stainless steel that it is not possible to be more specific.
